Here are six stories about hospitals using Lean process improvement as a strategy for success.

1. Hospitals are recruiting Lean leaders from the manufacturing industry to guide Lean initiatives. Hospitals need to ensure, however, that these Lean leaders can transition smoothly between the two industries.

2. Palo Alto, Calif.-based Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University is using the Lean business and management strategy to increase value and eliminate waste.

3. Temple, Texas-based Scott & White Healthcare created a wholly-owned subsidiary dedicated to improving healthcare processes through Lean principles.

4. Hospitals are using lean to manage capacity management in the emergency department.

5. Stanford (Calif.) Hospital & Clinics takes a Lean approach to performance improvement.

6. Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Hospitals took a Lean manufacturing approach at some hospitals to improve emergency department patient flow.
