A nine-box is a simplistic tool that can help hospital managers and executives organize employees’ performance and potential and also gain ground in their succession planning. The nine-box functions as a graph of sorts, based on its X and Y axes, and helps determine employees’ paths in the organization based on past performance and expectations about their future potential.

Performance is broken into three categories: outstanding, good and poor. Potential is also grouped into three categories: high, medium and low.

Drew Brock, PhD, with Select International, says the tool can help organizations reinforce clear and concise standards for employees, create dialogue about where to put developmental dollars, plan for succession and emphasize cultural values.
